THEY REMAINED silent after those words, but Jace lifted his hat to turn his head and look at Bradley. It was scary just how true what Bradley said rang to him. He understood Bradley in that one instant, if only for the time they spent lying with the crackling of the flames between them.

The man beside him didn’t speak or move, and the only way Jace could tell he was still awake or breathing was his periodic blinking and his stomach rising and falling.

He wished he could say something to alleviate the heartbreaking sadness he heard in Bradley’s voice. But even as he turned his head to stare up at the stars of forgiveness, he had nothing. So rather than ruin the peaceful understanding between them, Jace didn’t speak, wondering which of his many past transgressions he should plead clemency from this night.

Maybe he should seek to cleanse his soul for the day after getting his learner’s, when his mother grounded him for borrowing the car without permission and he screamed he hated her. Sure, that was a long time ago, and he did tell her he loved her and was wrong for doing it. Still, she was his mother. She’d been nothing but good to him, so those words should never have left his lips.

Or he needed redemption for leaving his brother, nephew, and brother-in-law to pick up his job for no good reason whatsoever. Then there were the countless number of relationships that failed because he was just too cold, and the others that weren’t relationships at all, but just ways to scratch an itch he thought he needed to take care of.

Whatever it was he needed to beg for wasn’t clear, and though he’d never heard of stars being forgiving before, Jace knew deep down he shouldn’t waste it. For if the stars above them were Karma’s eyes, Jace knew Karma had a tendency to be a bitch.

Long after midnight passed and the wee hours of the morning began, Jace walked Bradley back to the main house, kissed his cheek, his nose, and forehead and backed away. He knew if he did anything else, his week plan would go up in smoke.

Inside the guesthouse, the first thing he did when he got there was check on Sam. Sam was asleep with a book over his face. Jace smiled, picked up the book, and marked the place just in case Sam wanted that, then placed it on the bedside table. He pulled the sheets up to Sam’s shoulders, smoothed a hand over his dark hair, and turned off the lights.

In his bedroom, Jace took a shower, pulled on a pair of pajama bottoms, and contemplated if he should call Sean. At the last minute, he decided against it. He would probably wake Shen, and that would keep both Sean and Jeff up with the baby. Alone with his head full of thoughts, Jace stretched out on the bed, allowing the moonlight to caress his skin.

They are filled with forgiveness.
